What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise which aims to strengthen the body, mainly by placing an emphasis on increasing your core strength. Many people see it as a way to increase flexibility, and while this is true, there are also many other benefits to your general fitness and well-being.

In many ways, Pilates is similar to Yoga, in the sense that participants concentrate on improving their posture, balance and flexibility. However, Pilates is generally considered to be more intensive than Yoga. People enjoy Pilates because you are still getting a great workout, but as a low-impact form of exercise, the risk of injury is significantly decreased.

Also like Yoga, there is a meditation aspect to Pilates, because you focus on the connection between your mind and body. As you move through the various Pilates exercises, it’s important for your mind to maintain awareness of your breathing and how your body moves.

Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in Germany. As a carpenter and gymnast, he invented the form of exercise as a program for injured dancers and soldiers while living in the UK. He strongly believed that physical and mental health were closely linked, hence the birth of an exercise that had benefits for both.

Who can't do Pilates?

Most people can handle Pilates, as your program can always be adjusted to suit your individual level of flexibility and strength. However, there are a few situations where it’s recommended you don’t participate in Pilates:

  • People with unstable blood pressure
  • Those who have suffered a herniated disc
  • People at risk of blood clots
  • Sufferers of severe osteoporosis

What are the benefits of Pilates?

There are several key benefits of Pilates, which is why it has become so popular all over the world. Some of these benefits include:

Improved posture – Pilates teaches you how to achieve good posture, and also how to maintain it. This is one of the reasons why the exercise is so beneficial for people with lower back pain, or those who have undergone surgery. When doing Pilates exercises, you need to keep your body in alignment, meaning you’re training your body to move the right way.

Increased flexibility – Pilates helps to restore flexibility that gets lost as we age. It’s natural to lose some flexibility as we get older, so through gentle exercise, Pilates can help you regain some of that movement. Flexibility isn’t just great for your continued mobility, but it also plays a part in limiting the severity of injuries in case of a fall.

Muscle Tone – Muscle tone can be lost through age and inactivity. Sedentary lifestyles such as office jobs often contribute to the loss of muscle tone, and Pilates can help to gradually restore that. You will find yourself using muscles you haven’t used in a long time. While this may result in some soreness when you first start, you will quickly start to see the benefits and increased muscle tone.

Better balance – Pilates focuses on keeping your mind and body connected, so you will naturally start to become more conscious of how your body moves. The connection between mind and body can actually improve your balance.

Flat abdominal muscles – Pilates has a big focus on improving your core strength, and much of this comes from your abdominal area. So if you are looking for a flat stomach, then Pilates is a great exercise for you to do.

Reduction in stress – Many people use Pilates as a form of stress relief. In many ways, it’s a lot like meditation, because you focus on your breathing and the way your body moves. While still strenuous enough to provide fitness benefits, it’s a relaxing process that allows you to forget about stressful things in your daily life.

Improved sense of well-being – The mind-body connection required for Pilates provides a great sense of well-being. It strengthens your body, improves balance and posture, and is also relaxing at the same time.
